The Rutland College has a tradition of high academic standards. It caters for students over the age of sixteen, and offers a wide range of courses. There has recently been an ambitious programme to upgrade many of the facilities. This has included a new Library Resource Centre, a new Dining and Student Social Area, a Learning Services Centre and improved Computing accommodation and equipment.
Students come from a very wide variety of educational backgrounds, including the independent sector and from overseas. Lonsdale House, which is on the College site, on the edge of the town, if a fine old house equipped to a very high standard, and provides boarding accommodation for approximately forty students.
Oakham is a pleasant market town with a population just under 10,000. It has excellent rail links to Peterborough, London and Leicester. Boarding students have access to theatre and cinema visits, and a wide range of other activities. Rutland Water is nearby with a wide variety of recreational facilities.
Approximately thirty A/AS Levels, a variety of GCSE courses and a range of GNVQ courses at Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced Level are on offer. Other courses include the Diploma of Nursery Nursing (NNEB), Sports Leaders Award, Computer Aided Design and Computer Literacy and Information Technology (CLAIT) courses.
1996 saw the best ever examination results for the College. Not only was the overall A Level pass rate at its highest level, but over 50% of the entries at A Level produced passes at grade A, B or C. The College achieved the highest A Level points score of any Incorporated College in the East Midlands for the second time in three years. Over three quarters of students applying for Higher Education were successful in their application.
Students at the College have a wide range of extra curricular activities in which they can take part. These include the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Work and Community Experience, Music, Sport and Leisure activities.
The College prides itself on the level of help and advice that it provides to students, and a comprehensive induction programme for new students is organised. Careers advice is well structured, whether students are seeking employment or aiming for Higher Education. The Learning Services Centre provides a range of additional support to help students in their work. Each individual will be encouraged to develop to his, or her, full potential within an atmosphere of care and support from the College's well qualified staff.
